Lion El'Jonson: update

Hails Again brothers! After some time away from this piece I was able to gain a little perspective, and of course a little bit more skill. So I've gone ahead and revisited this, one of my very favorite bits from over the last few years. Hopefully the changes help to add to the awe inspiring nature of the Primarchs.

After re-examining the Lion Sword and literally buying another Cypher the fallen model ( i lost my origional ) I've cranked out a new, and what I feel is a more effective look for this most excellent of blades.

Also notice a few other minor add-ons and changes such as the scripting on his purity seals/battle honors, and some winged attachments for his pack. These will serve more in line with the look and profile when I do a helmeted version ( COMING SOON !! ).

Hails fellow Deviants, I recently finished the pencils on a year long project for my upcoming Dark Angels portfolio and I thought I would start it off with the mightiest of all the First Legion, The Primarch, Lion El'jonson.

These are essentially the finished pencils for the first part of my painting and refining process.

There will be 2 variants on the overall design I've been perfecting for a while now. The first is as you see here. The second will be of the Lion with full winged battle helmet, painted and ready for print.

The overall concept has been in a state of flux until the recently released Horus Heresy series novel " Fallen Angels ", by Black Library author Mike Lee ( see the Malus Darkblade series ) gave me a great deal of insight into the primarch's overall appearance and feel. This image is my best take on the direct cannon of the Horus Heresy regarding Jonson.

The lion sword ( blessed blade of the primarch ) is for the most part lifted directly from the "cypher, the fallen" table top miniature, in which he has the broken weapon chained to his back.
